Nouriel Roubini, the New York University economist who accurately forecast the bursting of the housing bubble and the resulting economic contraction, has become famous for his pessimismโhe has been the gloomiest of the doomsayers…
โThe question is, can the U.S. grow in a non-bubble way?โ [Roubini] asked the question rhetorically, so I turned it back on him.ย Can it?
โI think we have to โฆโ He paused. โYou know, the potential for our future growth is going to be lower, because of the excesses weโve had. Sustainable growth may mean investing slowly in infrastructures for the future, and rebuilding our human capital. Renewable resources.ย Maybe nanotechnology? We donโt know what itโs going to be. There are parts of the economy we can expect to lead to a more sustainable and less bubble-like growth. But itโs going to be a challenge to find a new growth model. Itโs not going to be simple.โ I took this not as pessimism but as realism. [Boldface added]
Sounds right to me. ย Real economic growth based on real technology advances, which take real work. ย โChris Peterson
